Frequently Asked Questions About Supports & Braces Australia
When should I use a support brace during exercise?
Support braces are appropriate when returning from injury (with physio guidance), managing a chronic condition like mild arthritis or tendinitis, or providing extra stability during heavy lifts. They should support your training, not replace strengthening the area. If you're relying on a brace to train through pain, that's a sign to see a physiotherapist rather than push through.
What's the difference between a compression sleeve and a rigid brace?
Compression sleeves provide warmth, mild support, and improved blood flow — they're for comfort and recovery, not structural stability. Rigid braces with hinges, straps, or stays restrict movement to protect an injured joint. For general gym use and mild discomfort, a compression sleeve is usually sufficient. For post-injury rehab or diagnosed ligament instability, a rigid brace may be recommended by your physio.
Should I wear knee sleeves for squats?
Knee sleeves (neoprene compression sleeves) provide warmth to the joint, mild proprioceptive feedback, and slight mechanical support during squats. They don't replace proper technique but can make heavy squatting more comfortable, especially in cold gyms. Most lifters find them beneficial for working sets above 70% of their max. They're allowed in most powerlifting competitions.
Can I wear a wrist brace while lifting?
Wrist wraps or braces can help during pressing movements (bench press, overhead press) by keeping the wrist in a neutral position under heavy loads. For pulling movements (deadlifts, rows), they're usually unnecessary and can mask grip weaknesses. Use them as a tool for heavy work, not a crutch for every exercise. If your wrists hurt during light pressing, see a physio.
How tight should a support brace be?
Tight enough to feel supportive compression but not so tight that you feel numbness, tingling, or restricted circulation. You should be able to slide one finger under the edge of the brace. For knee and elbow sleeves, they should be snug to put on but comfortable once in position. If your skin turns white or purple below the brace, it's too tight.

When and How to Use Training Supports and Braces
Training supports and braces serve two distinct purposes: protection during heavy training and support during injury recovery. Understanding which category you fall into helps you choose the right product and use it correctly. The goal is always to support your training, not to create a dependency that masks underlying weakness.
Supports for Healthy, Heavy Training
Knee sleeves (neoprene, 5-7mm) warm the knee joint, provide mild compression, and give proprioceptive feedback during squats and lunges. They are standard equipment for powerlifters and are allowed in competition. They do not prevent injury on their own but help maintain joint warmth and awareness under heavy loads.
Wrist wraps stabilise the wrist in a neutral position during heavy pressing (bench press, overhead press, push press). They are most valuable above 70-80% of your max, where wrist alignment becomes critical for safe force transfer.
Lifting belts increase intra-abdominal pressure during heavy squats, deadlifts, and overhead work. They do not replace core strength — they amplify it. Most lifters benefit from a belt above 80% of their max.
Supports for Injury Recovery
Hinged knee braces provide structural support for ligament injuries (ACL, MCL). These should only be used on medical or physiotherapy advice, with a structured rehab program alongside.
Elbow sleeves and braces provide compression and warmth for tendinitis (tennis elbow, golfer elbow). Useful during training to manage discomfort while the underlying condition is being treated.
Ankle braces stabilise the ankle joint after sprains. Graduated use (brace during activity, remove during rest) is typical in physio-guided rehab programs.
The Key Principle
Use supports to train through (not avoid) proper rehabilitation. A brace that lets you continue training with modified loads and movements is valuable. A brace that lets you ignore pain and train at full intensity without addressing the underlying issue is a recipe for a worse injury. When in doubt, consult a physiotherapist about the right support for your situation.
Our range of supports and braces covers training performance and injury recovery. All products ship Australia-wide.
